The Lithuanian Language is not, as many foreign visitors often assume, close to the Russian language. Lithuanian is one of two surviving Baltic languages. With Prussian now extinct as a language, Latvian is the only other remaining Baltic language. The third of the Baltic states, Estonia, where the official language is Estonian, might be connected to Latvia and Lithuania historically and in some cultural ways but, in terms of language, it is from a completely different language tree, which is actually closer to Hungarian.
Lithuanian is a Balto-Slavic relative of the Indo-European language tree, which is written in a Lithuanian variation of the Latin alphabet. Many of the words have a similar written form to Latvian but, when spoken, it actually sounds closer to Polish.
Lithuanian is spoken by 4-5 million people worldwide.
All of our Vilnius Out There guides are native Lithuanian Language speakers, but they are all also fluent in English, and many also speak Russian and German.
Laba diena! It is a great sign of respect ,and will get you a long way with the locals, if you take 30 minutes or so to read through and try to remember some of these Lithuanian phrases below. You will also find a number of free Lithuanian to English Translation language tools available on the Internet.
