Do's and Don'ts Vilnius

Around 25,000 to 30,000 British tourists visit Lithuania every year.  The main type of incident for which British nationals require consular assistance in Lithuania is for replacing lost and stolen passports.  You should leave your passport in a safe place and keep a copy of it with you for identification purposes.

If driving into Lithuania in winter, equip your car for severe conditions.  Winter tyres are a legal requirement in Lithuania between 10 November and 1 April.  Dipped Headlights are also compulsory from 1 September until 1 April.

Road traffic accidents are common.  Extra care must be taken at all times when driving, particularly when driving at night.

For some strange reason a number of foreign nationals have felt the need to urinate in public during their trip to the Lithuanian capital. Urinating on public buildings is a public-order offence that can lead to a period of time spend in a prison cell.

We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should check any exclusions, and that your policy covers you for the activities you want to undertake.

Be streetwise

Be aware that street theft is on the rise, so be extra vigilant when carrying valuables around tourist sites

Leave your passports and all valuable documents (e.g. driver’s licenses, credit cards, travellers cheques and flight tickets) in your hotel, preferably in a safe. Do not take them out with you if you do not need them as you may lose them to pickpockets.

Always carry the name, address and telephone number of your accommodation with you.
